In the past few years the decisions one has to make in regards to a diamond purchase have expanded from the basic Cs of Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat weight to include Categories such as rosecuts, rough (or raw) diamonds, and sliced diamonds. Don’t panic it’s really pretty simple and, actually, very exciting. Here’s a brief run down:
The type of faceted diamond called a rose cut dates to the 18th century. Rosecuts come in a wide variety of shapes and colors. The distinguishing factor is that they are always flat on the bottom.
Even though rosecuts are not as sparkly as their full cut counterparts, they have a very understated, antique-ey appeal.
It is only in the last few years that sliced diamonds have been used for jewelry purposes. They are the byproduct of diamond cutting or come from material that didn’t form in ways that could produce full or rose cut diamonds. It is very recent that their quirky, imperfect appeal has become popular.
Rough, or also called raw, diamonds are the actual diamond crystal structures that were formed at great depths within a layer of the Earth called the mantle. There they grew from carbon under extreme pressure and a multitude of other factors for over 1 – 3 billion years. Each contains its own unique traits and characteristics and, in their natural state, these precious gems reveal a very subtle beauty.
